Chapter 4 - Which Saturated Fats Are the Best?
|
Unfortunately,
most of us cannot go back to a diet of healthy game and grass fed meat
animals. Much of the meat we find at the grocery store has lost its
health value because of the methods used to raise and fatten the
animals. The meat is now filled with medicines and pesticides. Cows are
fed grains instead of the much healthier traditional grass. Pigs are
fattened with the very oils that we are told are to use to lose weight,
vegetable oils. Because of this, the unhealthy oils are transferred to
us in the meat and fat. Grass fed organic meat is best to eat, if you
can find it, but it is uncommon and expensive.
Dairy
products are also well known for their saturated fats. Because of the
emphasis on low fat, the cows are bred to give less fat, and what fat
there is has been removed. Since dairy cows in America are
treated the same way meat animals are this source of good saturated fat
has also lost much of its health value. On top of that, most milk is
now ultra pasteurized and homogenized, which leaves an almost worthless
product.
Conjugated Lineolic Acid, an important fatty acid found naturally in
milk that comes from grass fed cows and goats, has almost disappeared
from our milk today. If you can find organic grass fed raw dairy
products, they are extremely healthy for you as a great source of
saturated fat, but like organic meat, it is also hard to find and
expensive when you do find it. And then, of course, many people are
lactose intolerant, and cannot consume dairy products.
So, if we need saturated fat, and if our meat and dairy products are now a poor source of this, what can we eat?
That is where coconut oil comes in.
